Mission Australia is proud to be supporting the Big Exo Day in 2010, they are a great organisation, really making a difference and helping young people in the community. Read on to find out about Kelly, just one of the many people helped by Mission Australia.

Mental health problems affect young people more than any other group. In fact, an alarming 40% of young people aged 16 to 24 have experienced a mental disorder at some point in their life. Mission Australia is taking action to tackle what has become an epidemic.

Kelly* is a Mission Australia client - here's her story:

Aged only four years old Kelly was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, a behavioural condition characterised by social isolation and eccentric behaviour. By the time she was 17 Kelly had been hospitalised for anorexia and her agoraphobia – an anxiety disorder associated with fear of public places – became worse. Diagnosed with depression, she began to self-harm and attempted suicide three times. She then turned to alcohol and developed an addiction.

Kelly’s life took a turn for the better when she completed an intensive 12-week program at Triple Care Farm. With professional treatment from a psychologist, Kelly began to address each of her problems. Since completing the program in May 2010 Kelly has learnt to manage her multiple mental health issues and has conquered her reliance on alcohol. She is taking regular medication to control her conditions and receives ongoing counselling from a mental-health service in her home town.

It's amazing to think that one minute, the Sydney Showground is bare, empty, with no signs of anything happening at all, and within hours it's transformed into Australia's largest drug and alcohol free youth festival, with an electric atmosphere, and an event program like no other! It all takes as many committed people as we can find to work together to make it the great festival that Big Exo Day has been known for over the years.

The Big Exo Day provides a unique opportunity to be a part of a world-class festival, and get right up close and personal with bands, events staff, production crews, media and more. "I love the opportunity that Big Exo gives you to meet and get to know awesome people in youth work all over NSW. I know that as a part of this event, that I am part of something much greater, that is impacting young people in a massive way. It's bigger than just me or you... and it's so good to be involved like this! Obviously it's a fun experience, it's a roller coaster ride and you make such good friends along the way. I reckon everyone should do it at least once!"
